Brother From Another Mother

For those of you that read yesterday's blog, you may wonder how my relationship with my brother-in-law, Jonathan, has gotten where it is. It is a very interesting, not so common, story.

As mentioned yesterday, Jonathan is a Syracuse University graduate. This is where I did my graduate studies. Being a year young than me, by a stroke of luck, Jonathan was at Syracuse the same time I was.

Having met Jonathan a total of five times, he maybe opened his mouth to speak to me three of them. From observing him, I noticed that he liked to throw dinner rolls at little children, eat chocolate cake without using his hands, and call anybody with more than 10 percent body fat a "chunky butt."

I was thrilled to be spending a year with him. On top of it all, I was going to live with him. When it first was arranged, I wasn't quiet sure how it would turn out. But, I soon came to find out it would provide a year full of excitement and a greater bond than most in-laws get the opportunity to form.

I will let you in on some of the Syracuse happenings. My first few weeks, Jon showed me around. Where to eat, where to shop, where to go out for a drink. We went to some football games and a few parties. As we began to know each other better, a brother-sister like relationship started to form. We made fun of each other, mostly him making fun of my friends and I, but at the same time, we enjoyed each other's company.

We went to basketball games, bars, and movies together. We made weekly visits to Insomniac Cookies for fresh baked cookies to eat on our walks home. (http://www.insomniacookies.com/index.php)
I cleaned up his puke after nights of too much fun, and he broke my $500 digital camera by dropping it three times in one night. He overflowed the toilet and broke light fixtures throughout the house. He let me hang out in his room because mine was an ice box and made me feel a little safer when there was a man breaking into cars in our driveway.

Yes, I was lucky enough to have seen my brother-in-law transform from a scraggly 21 year old kid, to the man that still acts like a 21 year old kid that he is today.

Really, I am just kidding. It was a great experience and I consider him my brother. Our year as roomates brought us closer. Our relationship is one of sarcasm and poking fun at one another. I will always think fondly of our year together in Syracuse. And, I will always thank God that I married Jeff!
